I am an Assistant Professor in the Division of Social Sciences at Yale-NUS College in Singapore. I am a political theorist. I study early 20th century German political and legal theory in order to solve pressing contemporary problems of democracy. In particular, I am interested in democratic proceduralism, liberal constitutionalism, the origins and legitimacy of militant democracy, and legal revolution/democratic backsliding.
I am also interested in other pathologies of democracy and democratic society. For example, how digital technology contributes to thoughtlessness and conditioning that can degrade the quality of democratic institutions.
Prior to joining Yale-NUS, I was an Assistant Professor at Duke Kunshan University in Kunshan, China (just outside Shanghai), a joint venture liberal arts program between Duke University and Wuhan University. I have also taught at the National University of Singapore, Columbia University, and Barnard College.
